Our website (the “Site”) is operated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (“SANBI”, “we”, “us” and/or “our”) and has been created to provide our Site visitors (“you”, “your”) with information about biodiversity data in South Africa.

Main business
SANBI contributes to South Africa’s sustainable development by facilitating access to biodiversity data, generating information and knowledge, building capacity, providing policy advice, showcasing and conserving biodiversity in its national botanical and zoological gardens. Accordingly, its business is aimed at nature conservation and related activities.
Any costs/payment methods in respect of online transactions
The SANBI Bookshop is situated in the National Herbarium Building in the Pretoria National Botanical Garden at 2 Cussonia Avenue, Brummeria, Pretoria and stocks a wide range of publications relating to biodiversity including books published by SANBI Graphics & Editing. If you are unable to visit the SANBI Bookshop you can download the Bookshop catalogue here and order a book/publication by faxing or e-mailing the SANBI Bookshop Manager.
Once an order is approved and confirmed, payment can be made by way of electronic bank transfer, the details of which the SANBI Bookshop Manager will advise. Accordingly, there is no online payment gateway at present on this Site. The order form does not constitute an agreement between you and SANBI, but constitutes an offer which may or may not be accepted by SANBI depending on availability of the requested book/publication.

Security
SANBI reserves the right to institute any legal action against any person that delivers or attempts to deliver any damaging code to this Site or attempts to gain unauthorised access to any page on this Site.

We are the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), which was established on 1 September 2004 through the signing into force of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 by then President Thabo Mbeki.
SANBI contributes to South Africa’s sustainable development by facilitating access to biodiversity data, generating information and knowledge, building capacity, providing policy advice, showcasing and conserving biodiversity in its national botanical and zoological gardens.
Protecting your information is important to us and we would like to explain why we collect, store and use your information and assure you that we will keep your information confidential. SANBI will only share your Personal Information when legally required to do so, if we need to do so in order to fulfil our agreement with you or you have given us your consent to do so.

What information do we collect, what do we use it for and how do we store it?
When you interact through our site or other services we may collect certain information from you, including personal information. We will collect Personal Information from you when you voluntarily provide us with such information. For instance, when you subscribe to our email newsletters, contact us with an inquiry, leave comments on the Site or upload any of your observations or data through one of our services.
The information SANBI may collect from you will vary but can include your name, address, e-mail address, IP addresses, telephone number or birth date. This information will not identify you unless combined with Personal Information and SANBI does not use Personal Information in this process.
Furthermore, SANBI does not knowingly collect Personal Information of children without the consent of a parent or guardian.

What are cookies and how we use them?
SANBI may use cookies, which are small text files stored in a user’s browser, or web beacons, namely electronic images that allow this Site to count users who have accessed a particular page and to access certain cookies, to ensure that the Site is well managed and to facilitate improvement of the Site.

However, no system is perfect unfortunately and we cannot guarantee absolute security despite our best efforts. In the event that there is a privacy breach, we have let you know unless we are obligated by law not to do so.
Your rights in respect of your Personal Information
You have the right to know and have access to what kind of Personal Information we have of yours and can correct, if necessary, or delete out-of-date Personal Information we hold about you.
You also have the right to object to the processing of your Personal Information or to request that SANBI transfer the Personal Information we hold to another organization or directly to you.
