The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to assist with the collection of Chain-Of-Custody (CoC) biomaterials for the DNA barcoding reference database of priority animal taxa for Component 2 of the GEF (Global Environment Facility) 7 project.
This position requires a national diploma in Biological Sciences, Animal Sciences, Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification at NQF 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field or a degree in Biological Sciences, Animal Sciences, Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification at NQF 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field. A postgraduate qualification in Biological Sciences, Animal Sciences, Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification with NQF 8 will be an added advantage.
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) and experience in working with live animals will be advantageous; advance knowledge and experience in policies, procedures, processes, practices, and systems, related to collection of Chain-Of-Custody (CoC) biomaterials for the DNA barcoding are essential; advanced planning, organizing, and problem solving skills; ability to work under pressure whilst being quality, cost, and safety conscious; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience will be advantageous.
Key performance responsibilities include:
- Collect Chain-Of-Custody (CoC) biomaterials for the DNA barcoding reference database;
- Maintain and preserve biomaterials sample quality;
- Ensure on-site field daily coordination in consultation with line manager; and
- Procure chemicals, consumables and small field equipment.
