The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to contribute to divisional strategic objectives through leading and managing a section of the zoo which consists of a specific group of animal taxa according to best husbandry and welfare practices.
The position requires a degree in Zoology, Nature Conservation, Game Ranch Management, Animal Health, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Honours or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. The successful candidate must have 6 years’ experience in relevant field, 3 years of which should be at supervisory position(s). The successful candidate must have:
- Willingness and preparedness to work with dangerous animals
- Extensive experience in working with Reptiles and other Herps including Amphibians and Invertebrates
- In-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation
- Knowledge about legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation
- Knowledge about legislation and policies related to human resources, procurement, and financial management
- Must have a good understanding of the World Zoo and Aquaria Conservation and Animal Welfare Strategies
- Must have a good understanding of the South African National Standard for Zoo and Aquarium Practice
- Must have excellent project management skills
- Must have a good understanding of animal welfare and ethics
- Must have a clear understanding of Health and Safety in the work place
- A valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel.
Key performance responsibilities include:
- To lead the development of functional plans and contribute to the development of strategy for the animal collection and conservation directorate.
- To manage outputs such as the daily husbandry and welfare activities, section projects, animal capture operations, infrastructure projects, administration requirements and public needs.
- To manage a team in respect of outputs, staff relations, performance management, mentoring and skills development.
- To support governance, risk and compliance though budget management, asset and equipment management and health and safety requirements relating to the assigned section.
